Philip Carruthers

Former regional MD for Orient-Express Hotels and former MD of Copacabana Palace, Brazil

Philip is one of the most prominent names in the South American hotel world, having spent 18 years as the Managing Director of Orient-Express Hotels Copacabana Palace Hotel in Rio de Janeiro until 2007.  Alongside, he also served as Regional Managing Director for Orient-Express Hotels, part of the luxury Belmond Hotel Company for 23 years.

Philip also served for several years as President of both the Rio Hotel Association and the Rio Convention & Visitors Bureau and he actively participated in the bid process organised by the International Olympic Committee, which awarded the hosting of the 2016 Olympic Games to the city of Rio de Janeiro. He is currently the Chairman of the British & Commonwealth Society of Rio de Janeiro, and remains involved in the hotel business through his consultancy "Carruthers Consulting”.
